My crazy schedule this weekend for Arisia is below. This is after I received my original schedule and sent an incredulous email to program, events, and the con chair pointing out that I was scheduled for over twenty-five hours of work (masquerade eats noon-midnight Saturday with rehearsal and stuff), including a couple of times when I was scheduled for two places at once, and got them to eliminate another half-dozen items. I'm not sure what part of "no more than six items" was unclear; it seems like it should be an easy check within their program software to compare total number scheduled to the number one enters for "maximum total items" and flag someone if the former is greater than the latter. Likewise the "two places at the same time" problem.
Here's the list:
Arrive at South Station 5:00pm Friday; arrive hotel around 5:30-6ish, I imagine. Check in and get ready to roll with...
Eye of Argon Reading
Friday 11:30pm-1:00am, Carlton
Michael A Ventrella (mod), Susan de Guardiola, Hildy Silverman
The worst science fiction story ever written gets a reading by our brave panel as they compete to go the longest without tripping over a misspelled word or laughing uncontrollably. Audience members are also encouraged to take a chance. Can you keep a straight face, especially when the panel begins acting out the story?
(I'm looking forward to reuiniting with Hildy and Michael for another round of live-action Eye of Argon. I am now the reigning Philcon champion at reading this with a straight face!)
Surviving Your First Masquerade
Saturday 10:00am-11:30am, Carlton
Susan de Guardiola (mod), Byron Connell, Melissa Honig, Toni Lay, Elizabeth O'Malley
How to register, where to go, and what to expect entering your first masquerade.
(What part of "I do not wish to moderate" does Arisia not get? But this one will be okay -- this is stuff I've been doing for 25 years and can therefore do in my sleep. Fortunately, given the start time after a late-night item on Friday!)
Masquerade
Saturday night sometime, somewhere
Susan de Guardiola, MC
(They didn't tell me any silly details like where or what time; presumably this will be obvious from the convention schedule.)
Disco Line Dancing
Sunday 1:00pm-2:00pm, Commonwealth Ballroom ABC
Susan de Guardiola
Come dance like it's 1978! Easy disco-era line dances to 1970s dance hits. Including the Saturday Night Fever line dance! Scary 1970s costume welcome. No partner needed.
(It never fails to amaze me that people keep wanting to program this. Let's see whether it works as well as at the Dance Flurry...)
Cross-Step Waltz for Dummies
Sunday 2:30pm-3:30pm, Commonwealth Ballroom ABC
Susan de Guardiola
Learn this beautiful, flowing modern waltz form that can be danced to many non-traditional songs. This session is especially for those without couple dance experience. Flat shoes suggested. No partner needed, no experience required.
Cross-Step Waltz for Experienced Folk
Sunday 4:00pm-5:00pm, Commonwealth Ballroom ABC
Susan de Guardiola
Introduction to cross-step waltz for those who already have some dance experience (couple dancing, contra, etc.) Learn the basics and a few variations for this beautiful modern waltz form that can be danced to a wide variety of music. Flat shoes suggested. No partner needed.
(This pair of items is an experiment in splitting a "beginner" class between those who are complete dance beginners and those who are experienced dancers but want to learn a new form. Having both groups in one class can be awkward, since the latter group can usually move much faster. Let's see whether people sort themselves out appropriately.)
Does Anyone Here Know How to Madison?
Sunday, 7:00pm-8:00pm, Commonwealth Ballroom ABC
Susan de Guardiola
Answer Brad's famous question from the Rocky Horror Picture Show with a yes! Learn one version of the original 1960s Madison, an easy line dance -- no partner needed, no experience needed.
(I love the Madison. I know what this says about me. Big strong line!)
Martian Croquet: A Steampunk Diversion
Sunday, 10:00pm-11:15pm, Harbor Ballroom III
Susan de Guardiola
Victorian explorers, adventurers, chrononauts, and aethernauts! Join us in the fine sands of the remote Martian Canal Estates, where the well-dressed 19th-century tourist and all civilized alien entities may indulge in the genteel yet cut-throat Martian pastime of parlor croquet. Portable gravity generators encouraged to prevent loss of croquet balls into the aether. Steampunk, historical, or science fictional costume encouraged for all species. Tentacular assistance prohibited.
(Croquet with teeny-tiny little sets. On tables. It's like billiards meets polo.)
After I finish packing up croquet, around 11:45pm Sunday night, I will then be free to relax and enjoy the convention.
My bus home leaves at 11:15am Monday.
I'm not sure when to tell people to try to catch me to say hi. Right after an item but not in the hour before any other item. After the masquerade Saturday. Very late Sunday night.
This is what I do for fun. Really.
