After two years of completely insane schedules at Arisia, plus similar at Lunacon and a worldcon that got completely wiped out by running the Hugo Ceremony, this year I am working aggressively on maintaining "just say no" and "do not over-volunteer" policies. I have succeeded in giving myself a pleasant, sane schedule for Arisia that should allow me to actually enjoy seeing my friends and attending panels and program items (like the Emerald Rose concerts!) that I am not actually on. I look forward to this new, relaxed way of attending Arisia!
Cross-Step Waltz for Dummies
Sat 12:00-1:00 PM
Commonwealth Ballroom ABC
Susan de Guardiola
Learn this modern waltz form that can be danced to many non-traditional songs. This session is for those without couple dance experience. Flat or low-heeled shoes suggested, leather soles ideal. No partner needed.
Cross-Step Waltz for Experienced Folk
Sat 1:00-2:00 PM
Commonwealth Ballroom ABC
Susan de Guardiola
Introduction to cross-step waltz for those who already have some dance experience (couple dancing, contra, etc.) Learn the basics and a few variations for this beautiful modern waltz form that can be danced to a wide variety of music. Flat or low-heeled shoes suggested, leather soles ideal. No partner needed.
(This pair of items is a repeat of last year's experiment in splitting a "beginner"
class between those who are complete dance beginners and those who are
experienced dancers but want to learn a new form. Having both groups in
one class can be awkward, since the latter group can usually move much
faster. It worked fairly well last year.)
Mail 'n' Flail
Sun 11:30 AM-12:45 PM
Independence
Liz Cademy (moderator), Susan de Guardiola, Katherine Pfeffer
If knitters can "stitch 'n' bitch," then mailers can have a mail 'n' flail! All experience levels welcome, except absolute beginners.
(I will be there, with knitting tools and rings, knitting and socializing and providing bits of advice if people want them.)
The Arisia Book Club: Reading the Hugos
Executive Board Room
Sun 2:30-3:45 PM
Kiini Ibura Salaam (moderator), Susan de Guardiola, Meg Westfox, Eric Zuckerman
Read this year's Hugo-winning novel (Among Others by Jo Walton) and stories (“The Man Who Bridged the Mist” by Kij Johnson; “Six Months, Three Days” by Charlie Jane Anders; and “The Paper Menagerie” by Ken Liu) and come on down to discuss!
(I get to talk about books! Yippee!)
My other project this year at Arisia is to have a few pieces in the art show, by way of having a fire sale on some of my remaining chainmail stuff, since I'm basically out of that biz nowadays and just want to unload stock.
If you want to hang out with me at Arisia, this is the year to do it!
I wish you a good *relaxing* time, Susan.

Ooo! You make (or made) chainmail? That's very cool!
